When a lineman stays low to the ground he brings his center of mass closer to the ground as well.  This makes him harder for an opposing player to take him down because he will always be hitting the lineman at his center of mass.  This maneuver is crucial for a defensive lineman in protecting his own goal while the opposing team is in the red zone.
